What I Contribute to the Community

1) Proven success in high-pressure environments

4 years in high performance netball coaching gave me valuable experience in the pressure cooker environment of high stakes decision making.  I learnt to hone my leadership skills and have an even greater appreciation and awareness of my own strengths and triggers.  While decision making around the Council table can sometimes feel like sitting in the ‘hot seat’, my experiences in the coaching ‘hot seat’ have consolidated my performance and resilience under pressure.

2) Independent Politician

As an independent, I am not aligned to any political party. I make my decisions on an issue-by-issue basis.

I know that some people will agree with the decisions I make and some people will not -  it comes with the territory. But know that I will always have a balanced view, look at the big picture and think deeply about the effects of my decisions on others. I am a good listener and an empathetic leader who wants to serve.

3) Proven success as a City Councillor

From my last term on council I had the pleasure of working with a number of teams to deliver the Western Rail Trail, the Bike plan, 3 x Destination playgrounds and the development of Hamilton Gardens.  Securing over $2.5M of Lotteries Funding for the Hamilton Gardens was a highlight for me.

Raising over $8M of  funding from NZTA, The National Cycleways fund, Lotteries, Vibrant Hamilton Trust, Grassroots Funding and more through the workstream of the External Funding Committee is another achievement Im very proud of.

The Youth Advisory panel also gave me an opportunity to work more closely with our young people giving support and guidance in the council environment.

As a CouncilIor this was the process I learnt to getting things done for Hamilton.

1. Ask what your community needs,

2. Listen to them

3. Develop a plan with eager parties

4. Revise and refine the plan

5. Win the Council vote

6. Then deliver - sometimes in total, staged or in a cut back version - depending on finances.

Service is a privilege and getting things done brings me great satisfaction.
